As I Wanted To Reward I wanted to reward uality I truly didn t like reading it and have finished it with a sense f so what This is my all time favourite book written by Gail I have read it twice Absolutely loved this book One The Last Great Revolution of the small things that appealed to me was that it followed in time logically rather than skipping back and forth as so many current storytellers seem to like I really like the deep character development and the setting was fascinating It is setn prairie farm during WWII Lots f great detail suspense conflict She is a very descriptive writer with wonderful images Edging close to being in my top ten f all time The Cure for Death by Lightning is definitely a Canadian book If you ve ever spent time in Blind Spots onef Canada s many isolated rural communities you ll understand what I m talking about Makeshift worlds friendship with some A Boy and A Bear in a Boat of the strangest yet most alluring and interesting people uniue culture and an atmospheref magic Anderson Dargatz captures it all very well in this historical fiction novel set ver half a century ago Beth is a wonderful and endearing main character and the uirky people in her life are eually as well written and curious as she is are eually as well written and curious as she is her mother s bizarre fascination with death to the hired hand who works n the family farm by the way it was great to see a character in a book with Tourette s Syndrome it s St. Johns Wort often not addressed in fictionr when it is it s made The Roman Family out to be disturbing and creepy there is no end to the way that these characters come together in Turtle Valley in theirwn unexpected ways The Cure for Death by Lightning can be a weird sort Hirvenmetsästäjä of book but a wonderfully intriguingne
As Well Twenty Years Or So After well Twenty years Hollywood Walk of Fame: 2000 Sensational Stars, Star Makers and Legends or so after The Cure for Death by Lightening A Recipe for Bees and A Rhinestone Button I found myself mullingver the influence that Gail Anderson Dargatz has had A Christmas Miscellany on my future literary exploration Twenty years ago her novel was nominated for The Giller Prize a literary award newly established in 1994 to celebrate excellent Canadian writers Knopf Canada had launched a program The New Facef Fiction in 1996 to bring Canadian authors to the attention Too Bad to Die of the country s readers and Gail s first book was among themBecausef her novel I became a person who paid attention to The Giller Prize process from the nomination stage to the win I was introduced to vast talent who I d never met before and a plethora OXENBOXEN of previously undiscovered serious literary styles I didn t realize it at the time but Gail introduced me to magical realism in her novels where I smoothly absorbed myself into the magical storytelling and emerged enchanted Isabel Allende then held no rapture for me Gail s books led me to try authors which I would formerly have by passed The gentle magical realism slightly fantastical turns in the novelsf Sarah Allen Addison and Joshilyn Jackson further increased my appreciation for the genre Perla by South American author Caroline de Robertis the lauded The Snow Child and the haunting critic s favourite Wolf Winter I Resist (Wicked Ways Book 1) owe the risk tasking and resulting pleasure to Gail Anderson When fifteen yearld Beth Week’s family is attacked by a grizzly her father becomes increasingly violent making him a danger to his neighbors his family and especially Beth Meanwhile several young children from the nearby Indian reservation have gone missing and Beth fears that something is pursuing her in the bush But friendship wit. Author uses the First Nations Coyote figure as a menacing presence in the story It is my understanding that the Coyote is Beautiful Ghosts (Inspector Shan, of a trickster I am not versed enough in Native American folklore say if this is always the case however it seems to me like it would have been appropriate to use a different figure better yet create herwn possibly inspired by many myths That being said I am looking forwarding to reading by Gail Anderson Dargatz in fact I have the seuel Turtle Valley with me now I re read this novel as part Oh! Calcutta of my current uest to discover some newfferings to place Hush, Hush (Hush, Hush, on my grade 11 independent study reading list next semester While I won t be adding it to their list and I ll explain why momentarily it was every bit as enjoyable the second time around The novel unfoldsn a family farm in the remote Turtle Valley BC in the 1940 s The narrator is 15 year The Indian in the Cupboard (The Indian in the Cupboard, old Beth Weeks whose personal comingf age struggles are juxtaposed against several bizarre and frightening Reasoning and the Logic of Things occurrences in her community the grisly deathf her classmate which is dubiously blamed The Holcroft Covenant / The Rhinemann Exchange on a bear the appearancef strange portents in the natural world which are shrugged The Night Before Christmas: or, A Visit from St. Nicholas: The Heirloom Edition off by all witnesses and the increasingly erratic and violent behaviour among the men in the community including Beth s father His unpredictable moods blamedn a head injury he suffered during the Great Warleave the entire family including the two hired hands walking n eggshells daily
