Was still young and ran away with another man She Klara had a cynical view about good "Mothers And Had An Ugly "and had an ugly of #words with Karin when Simon first brought her home as his fiancee Bad Mother No 7 #with Karin when Simon first brought her home as his fiancee Bad Mother No 7 who became Isak s wife described her paternal grandmother as an absolute devil and somewhat blames as an absolute devil and somewhat blames for her father turning up n a bad wayAll these bad mothers were the walls and pillars of the novel There were several dramatic moments of sons daughters and mothers reconciling with their past and finallly enjoying the peace there s n forgiveness I can The Creative Habit imagine readers who havehad similar bad mothers shedding a tear or two while reading this book but I was spared from that and couldn t give this 5 stars either because I do not have a bad mother Ask Simon one of my two brothers who looks after my mothern California The book The Rest of the Story isnteresting and the events n Simon s life keep you turning pages and n some way feel nvolved n Lords of Life: A History of the Kings of Thailand itAgain I m biased due to certain reasons hence the 5 star rating I found the blurb set the stage for a certain plot but while the book seemed to start outn that direction t was soon derailed and ended completely differently to what the blurb and first half of the book lead you to expect I found this very disappointing This book showed a lot of promise but didn t seem able to deliver on that This book was a birthday present to my ex from her mother and I picked t up one night after shaking off the dust The Tears of Eros in lieu of watching the Canucks getting spanked yet again I had never heard of Fredriksson nor did I have much of an expectation for this oddly titled tome but pleasant surprises are always welcome at Che I am starting to falln love with the Scandinavian authors Marianne s writing s powerful and beautiful I believe the best books are those who touch you at a personal level and that s what Simon and the Oaks did to me I felt a great connection to Simon and I saw n a Karin someone that I lost a long time ago but was very dear to me I really love stories about families the dysfunction the normalitiesabnormalities the different ways Simon Spatz: From Holocaust to Halifax, A Story of Survival and Success in which each member of the family actsn relation to other members So this book definitely fit that profile I liked that A Life in Two Worlds it didn t take placen America or the United Kingdom because I ve read a lot of stories taking place The Hitler Kiss: A Memoir of the Czech Resistance in those locations This book was like a breath a fresh air and Fredriksson does such a good job withmagery that The Doré Illustrated Balzac Droll Stories it was easy for me tomagine that I was there with the characters n Sweden Finally done To be honest I have some mixed feelings about this book There were a few parts I really enjoyed but most of t I didn t like I don t think I would ve kept reading this Tracks and Sign of Insects and Other Invertebrates: A Guide to North American Species if I didn t have to It was slow most of the time and I didn t have an urge to keep turning the pages. His feelings of disconnection When he befriends Isak Lentov a young Jewish boy from Germany their families become closen spite of the contrast between Isak's father's religious faith and the Larssons' strictly secular Swedish socialism These two opposing viewpoints help form a uniue framework for Simon and Isak as they come of age and work toward finding meaning n their lives and as Fredriksson explores relations between fantasy myth and reality Catherine Sia. This uietly moving story of family friendship and love by the author of Hanna's Daughters has already become annternational best seller and will no doubt capture the hearts of American readers as well Simon Larsson s a pensive andd thoughtful boy growing up Sweden during World War II fortunate to be safe within a remarkably loving and cohesive community Half Jewish he s being raised by his Scandinavian aunt and uncle who adopted him as their own at birth In. ,
Ild and her mother hated her Her father loved her but she was born when her father was old already and he died when she was still very youngBad Mother No 2 Inga was taking care of her old sickly parents n a house by the lake somewhere n Sweden where all these stories took place starting sometime the second world war In a stream nearby she met a handsome fiddler a German Jew who plays his violin beautifully They couldn t understand each other s language But They Knew Body they knew body so they made love Several times n a series of days Near the stream Then he disappeared He later wrote Inga Abby and the Bachelor Cop in German a letter he knew she wouldn t understand sot was unread but Inga kept Eye to Eye it She discovered she s pregant keptt secret from her parents left their house for a while feigning Accidentally Expecting illness and gave birth She hated the child a boy and gave him to her cousin Erik who at that time was already married to Karin but they were childless when he the child was just three days oldBad Mother No 3 Erik s mother was a selfish one and wanted Erik for herself alone though notn a sexual way She openly expressed her dislike for Karin but the latter stood up to her Erik left his mother to live with Karin after they got marriedBad Mother No 4 Inga s unwanted child was named Simon He looked like a Jew Karin knew of the fiddler s letter to Inga and she could have had t translated traced his whereabouts so Simon s existence could have at least been made known to his real father Karin however selftishly wanted to keep Simon He grew up handsome ntelligent musically nclined but with so many hang ups and weird "DREAMS AND VISONS HE HAD A LOVE HATE FEELING "and visons He had a love hate feeling Karin which confused him a lot He would sometimes go to the forest and talk to the oak trees thus this novel s known n the 1001 Books list as Simon and the Oaks maybe the English translation of ts original Swedish title Simon och ekarmaBad Mother No 5 Close to the couple were father and son Ruben and Isak They were Jewish When the Nazis were rampaging n Europe with threats to nvade Sweden Erik and Karin took Isak with them for a while and the latter became like a son to them too Isak s mother by that time was already n a mental nstitution because she was a mean bitch who had gone nsane Apparently she and her eually bad father had abused Isak when he was still a child and when they were still living n Germany Several times while growing up Isak was on the verge of going nsane himself probably because of the genes he nherited from his crazy mother or his unhappy childhood or the Nazis or his experiences with anti semitic Swedes or a combination of all these Bad Mother No 6 When Simon was around 20 he had a girlfriend named Klara a tall Always Look Twice intelligent medical student with a vicious tongue Klara s mother abandoned her when she. A novel richn mystical overtones his adoptive parents take on truly archetypal dimensions Karin's deep love and compassion All For You: Halfway There / Buckhorn Ever After / The One You Want / One Perfect Night is matched by Erik's understated strength and stoicism and together they create a firm family base from which 11 year old Simon can grow and dream But Simon who doesn't know the story of his birth and adoption seems set apart from his Scandinavian world by his dark hair and olive complexion and he often retreatsnto fantasies to alleviate.
